Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease occurs when gum, cementum covering the root of the teeth, periodontal ligament, and the alveolar bone get infected.Gingivitis is the earliest stage of a periodontal disease in which the infection is only confined to the gums. However, as the disease progresses, supporting tissues also become infected.

Bacteria in the dental plaque are the main reason behind the occurrence of periodontal disease. In order to fight off the bacteria, the immune system release substances that cause inflammation and damage to the gums, the periodontal ligament and the alveolar bone. This results inswollen, bleeding gums, or the onset of gingivitis. Periodontal disease, in its more advanced stage, also causes loosening of the teeth.

In the past, fear of dental surgery has kept people with gum disease from seeking the care they needed. Well, those days are gone forever as new, advanced procedures are much more comfortable.
