Dental scaling and root planing is used to treat gum disease. Scaling is the procedure in which plaque and tartar is removed from the tooth surfaces while root planing is the process in which the root surface is smoothened to remove any irregular areas.

Purpose of Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planning remove plaque and calculus from tooth and root surfaces which help in getting rid of bacteria that cause gum disease. They are very effective in treating the early stages of gingivitis. They may be used before surgery in treatment of advanced gum disease.

Scaling and Root Planing Procedure

The scaling and root planing procedure is painless and generally done without anesthesia. However, your dentist may use local anesthesia to provide complete comfort. Hand or ultrasonic instruments are used to clean the tooth and root surfaces. Sometimes, it can be done in one single visit. However, it may take several visits if your dentist will do this procedure on one section of your mouth at each visit.

Expectation After the Treatment

You will feel little or no discomfort after scaling and root planing. There would be mild bleeding from your gums and they will be sensitive to temperature for few days. Your dentist may prescribe over-the-counter pain medication to reduce the discomfort. Follow good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups for healthy gums after the treatment.

We provide quality scaling and root planing services at an affordable rate and handle the procedure with care and perfection.
