We understand that many patients experience anxiety at the dentist’s office. To ensure that your visits with us are stress-free, we offer two safe, mild forms of sedation dentistry. If you’d like to have sedation for your dental procedure, please let us know prior to your appointment.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous oxide offers just the right amount of sedation to help most patients relax during a dental procedure. Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a mild sedation agent that is inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose. One of the advantages of nitrous oxide is that it takes effect quickly and wears off just as fast.

While inhaling nitrous oxide, you’ll feel calm and comfortable. Some patients also have sensations of tingling or heaviness in their arms and legs and a feeling of lightheadedness. Within minutes of removing the nitrous oxide mask, you’ll feel back to your normal self—you’ll even be able to drive yourself home from your appointment.

Conscious Oral Sedation (Anti-Anxiety Therapy Sedation)

Conscious oral sedation, or anxiolytic therapy, is an alternative form of sedation for patients who need more help relaxing during a dental procedure. Like nitrous oxide, conscious oral sedation allows you to remain awake, but you will be in a more deeply relaxed state. If you need multiple procedures, we can usually do them all in a single visit with conscious oral sedation.

Your dentist will prescribe an anti-anxiety medication for you to take before your procedure. Because you’ll be taking this medication prior to your appointment, you’ll need to have someone bring you to our office; since conscious oral sedation doesn’t wear off as quickly as nitrous oxide, you’ll also need to arrange for someone to bring you home.
